Qtel Joins Hands for Earth Hour
Iconic Qtel Tower will Switch Off Lights in Support of International Sustainability Campaign
As part of its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, Qtel today announced that it will be supporting this year’s Earth Hour.
The company will switch-off every light in its imposing Headquarter Tower in West Bay, Doha as part of the international campaign on Saturday, March 28.
Qtel was the first company in Qatar to publically commit to the event, and hopes its example will encourage other businesses and individuals to follow suit.
Earth Hour is an annual international event, created by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which asks people to turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour, to preserve energy and demonstrate the importance of sustainable living.
This year, Earth Hour will take place around the world on March 28, 2009, at 8.30 pm local time. The campaign aims to reach one billion people in 1,000 cities – making it the largest and most widespread in the event’s history.
Iconic buildings ranging from the Eiffel Tower in France, the Acropolis of Greece and the Pyramids of Egypt will all go dark for the event.
“We wanted to ensure that Qatar was represented during Earth Hour and – given that our headquarters provides a key landmark in the city – knew that turning the lights off on our tower would attract interest and attention across Doha. Environmental issues are one of the key pillars of our CSR strategy and so there is a natural fit with an international event like Earth Hour,” said Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel.
Qtel’s CSR strategy – “For Qatar, Hand in Hand” – looks to prioritize campaigns that have a lasting impact on the lives of the people of Qatar. As well as environmental issues, Qtel is also engaged in education, healthcare, social welfare and sports initiatives.
The Qtel Tower will go dark from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday. Normal service will be provided to customers throughout this time.
